Our Story So Far
July 2012 - the Nanaimo Cinema Society Facebook group was started by Zachary Tannar to bring local filmmakers together.
July 27, 2012 - Our first meet up. November 3, 2012 - Our very first guest speaker Greg Jeffs. The talk with Greg was the spark that ignited the Cinema Society. January 2013 - We kicked off the year 2013 with our first Script Session (which became our signature monthly event) and then our now popular Film Jam! |

May 22, 2013 - the Hub City Cinema Society became an official organization! The “Hub City” reflected that the Cinema Society and Nanaimo is a hub to congregate at for filmmakers from all over Vancouver Island - from Victoria to Campbell River.
May 25, 2013 - the Hub City Cinema Society hosted its first Local Cinema Showcase at Nanaimo Centre Stage (now Harbour City Theatre).
At the beginning of 2014, thanks to Jacqui Kaese, we had two very special guest speakers - Mackenzie Gray (actor in Man of Steel) and Peter Kent (stunt double of Arnold Schwarzenegger)! June 13, 2014 - Our first big Local Cinema Showcase at Vancouver Island University’s Malaspina Theatre! |

October 1, 2014 - Acquired the Hub City Cinema Studio space in downtown Nanaimo on Lois Lane!
January 2015 - Received our first ever grant - a municipal event grant from the City of Nanaimo to support our next big Cinema Showcase! April 25, 2015 - We finished off the society’s year with a second big Local Cinema Showcase at VIU! March 2016 - We organized our first 1 Minute Mobile Movie Challenge. Ten of the minute mobile movies were selected and screened at our Local Cinema Showcase on April 23, 2016.
November 2017 - We hosted our first two day local film festival, CINEFEST, screening 22 short films and 3 feature films! September 26/27, 2018 - We had our film festival CINEFEST at the Avalon Theatre for the first time! |

2019 - Developed our 5 Year Strategic Plan for further growth of the society
May 22, 2020 - On our 7th year anniversary we officially launched our new name and branding as CineCentral Filmmakers Society! The name changed reflected our growth as an organization that represented filmmakers not just in Nanaimo but all over Vancouver Island.

The CineCentral Filmmakers Society is a continual work in progress and in the state of evolution. We have accomplished a lot these past years, and we have much more to accomplish. With our eyes on ever greater heights of aspiration, we are currently writing the next scene. Do you want to help write it?
